District Nominee Selected for University Scholar Fellowship for 2007-2008

The District 5100 University Scholar Fellowship Committee, (Birol Yesilada, David Jay, and Reg Keddie), interviewed applicants for the University Scholar Fellowship for 2007-2008 and unanimously selected Professor Jack Corbett as the District’s nominee for this program. Dr. Corbett is an Associate Professor of Public Administration at the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1974. Dr. Corbett plans to spend 9 months in Oaxaca, Mexico at the Instituto Tecnologico de Oaxaca and assist in development of courses in resource management and policy designed to meet the needs of students who seek to integrate these materials into their engineering and planning programs, more advanced course for graduate students, faculty development that will result in exchange programs with Portland State University, and provide assistance with local community projects such as management of clean water projects, natural resources management, and public administration. Dr. Corbett is familiar with the terrain as he has frequently visited this region of Mexico and worked closely with academics, community volunteers and Rotarians.

Thanks.

Birol

It’s Club Photo Time!

It’s time to update our club brochure and that means a new photo. The last one we took was more than two years ago! I’ll bring a camera this week. PLEASE plan to stay after the meeting for 5 minutes. THANK YOU!

Birthdays & Anniversaries – August

7 Happy Club Anniversary, Lorna (2001)!
13 Happy Birthday, Karen!
22 Happy Anniversary to Dennis & Kathy!
25 Happy Birthday, Don!

Lynn won David’s International birthday gift auction. Emily outdid herself and Shelly was the lucky winner. Karen’s wonderful Finnish-themed gift went to Shirley. What will Don surprise us with? Will Dennis divulge his number of years of wedded bliss with a $1 per year donation? Stay tuned…

Remember, you can designate the beneficiary of the money your birthday gift auction raises. Just tell our saint of a treasurer, Bob. Otherwise, the money will go into the ‘fines and brags’ pot.

Here’s a peek at September festivities:

11 Happy Anniversary to Bob & Karen!

19 Happy Club Anniversary, Carol Lynn (2000)!

What is "Every Rotarian, Every Year" all about?

This initiative by the board of trustees of the Rotary Foundation

[1] encourages every Rotarian to participate in a Foundation humanitarian or educational project that truly makes a difference in the world every year, and

[2] encourages every Rotarian to contribute to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund toward the worldwide $100.00 per capita annual giving goal every year. That’s just $8.33 per month and also makes you a member of the Red Wing Society (earning you red pin tails).

Need help getting started? Nancey would love to help you out.

You are a part of the “every Rotarian, every year” initiative. Thank you for your support of the Rotary Foundation and its work.

District Leadership Training

Training is recommended for anyone interested in, or currently holding, a board position and also for new members. Six of your fellow club members are currently enrolled and enjoying the experience. The next training begins August 21st. If you’re interested, sign up NOW! You can download an application here: http://beachrotary.com/membersonly/RotaryAcademyApplic.doc

Classification Talks

I’ve so enjoyed getting to know the members who joined after I did, and learning about your classification and personal histories. I’ve been thinking about how I missed the classification talks of those of you who were in the club before I joined. Not only do I want to get to know YOU better, I’d like to hear more about your business life, the classification you represent. I imagine I’m not alone. So… please think about a 5-minute classification talk you could give on the spur of the moment. When we have extra time (short presentation or low announcement week), let’s put it to good use! Post to the blog or send Keleigh an email when you’re ready to be called on to give your chat.

Service Opportunities

August 25: Rotary is signed up to staff the Kite Festival Information Booth. I think Shelly has convinced Steve to create a piece of stained glass to raffle. How else can we use this opportunity? Fundraising? Rotary Education? How can YOU help? Contact Shelly to sign up and for details.

4-Way Test Essay Competition: Prospective Member Susie Spence is willing to dive in and help us connect with the teachers. We need a Rotarian to step up to chair the committee. Contact Keleigh for more info.

Welcome, Club Members!

It seems there is so much information to share with you each week and I know the bulletins have been getting long. Instead of repeating important items from week to week, I’ve decided to start our very own club blog. Here, I’ll post important information and weekly I’ll send you a brief reminder and highlights of the posts.

Feel free to add your own comments to the blog!

YIRS,

Keleigh
