UPDATE: Children of the Golden Triangle

Hello all,

First of all, thank you for your participation in the matching grant for Children of the Golden Triangle.  I wanted to let you know where we are in the process.

As you may know, I’ve been the primary in writing the grant.  (What an educational experience it has been!)  After in-depth conversations with the D5100 grants chair and with PDG Dick Elixman, we’ve determined that it is possible to increase the grant to cover eight toilet blocks, rather than the four we had been talking about earlier.  Eight, as you’ll recall, is the number David Stevenson originally asked us to consider.

To that end, I have re-submitted the grant.  I allocated the difference to the Lake Oswego Club, primarily for expediency in getting the revamped request to the committee but also because Lake Oswego has sufficient funds in reserve for this project to fully fund the additional amount.  The total amount is now $43,383.36.

Total Project  $43,383.36
Source of Funds Partner Clubs DDF
Chiang Rai Club  $     100.00
Lake Oswego Club  $  9,103.00  $  9,103.00
Clackamas Club  $  2,000.00  $  2,000.00
SW Pacific Co Peninsula  $  1,000.00  $  1,000.00
Wilsonville  $     250.00  $     250.00
Subtotals Cash and DDF  $12,453.00  $12,353.00
Total Co-Sponsor Contrib  $24,806.00
Requested from TRF  $18,577.36
Total Financing  $43,383.36

I am leaving Monday morning for Thailand to make an on-site visit to this project.  While I am there, one of my goals will be to assemble a community assessment.  In the meantime, the MG is in the approval process.  When I return, it will be possible for Wilsonville and Clackamas to increase their share of the total, thereby reducing LO’s contribition.  Just respond to me by email if you wish to up your contribution.  Keleigh, I understand SW Pacific County is firm in its commitment of $1,000, which is just fine.  And thanks to all of you for joining in to protect the children of the Golden Triangle.

Best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year!

Greetings for 2007 from Shirish

My fellow Partners in Service

We have had a wonderful 2006..here is wishing we have a fun filled 2007

This Year… I wish you days of ordinary miracles….

An unexpected phone call from an old friend…

Green stoplights on your way to work, home or shop!!!

I wish you days of little things to rejoice in…

The fastest line at the grocery store..

A great sing along song on the radio..

Your keys right where you look!!!!

They say it takes a minute to find a special person…
An hour to appreciate them…
A day to Love them..
But…an entire Life to forget them…

Make and Take that Time!!!!!!!!

And from the Divine I ask..

For the mind —- Knowledge
For the heart —- Love and Joy
  For the life —- Power
 For the matter —- Beauty

Have a wonderful Year

With lots of love and remembrances

Shirish

How the Rotary Foundation touched one person’s life:

“What we do is touch other people. . . Open the horizon to them. . . Say ‘you matter.’ you see, the five men who chose me to become a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar are gone. . . But they’re not. They never will be. Because along the way, I will in my own way share with others – and have – what those five men and the 60 members of the Marshall (Texas) Rotary and the tens of thousands of other members of Rotary did in 1956 when they said, ‘Bill Moyers, you can matter.’”

Bill Moyers, TV Journalist and Commentator, and Former Deputy Director of the Peace Corps.

CGT Grant; Reply from Sharon

Thank you for the kind words, Shirish.  And to all of you, thanks for your patience–it took awhile to get this far.  Now we need to cross our fingers that the District has money available and gives their approval.  And there will no doubt be additional questions to be answered.

Now for an admission.  If you examined the attachment from Shirish closely, you may have noticed an arithmatical error on p. 5.  I inadvertently picked up a draft copy of that page.  The error has now been corrected, and we’re back in business.  (Correct amount requested from TRF is $8,091.68; total project financing is $21,691.68.)

I appreciated the opportunity to write this draft.  It was my first try at such a thing, and I’ve learned a lot!

Words from a past Rotary Foundation ambassadorial scholar:

The Rotary Foundation's programs are all the more important because
we live in a world of sharp contrasts: fear and hope, illness and
good health, poverty and wealth. Worse, we live in a world in which
inequalities of income, unemployment – and presumably exclusion from
well-being – have sensibly increased in the last fifteen years, not
so much between countries, but with countries, developed and
developing alike. In such a situation, the role of the Rotary
Foundation is of the utmost importance."

French professor Rene Munier, 1967-78 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial
Scholar

What is a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship?

Established in 1947 the academic-year Ambassadorial Scholarship program, valued at $26000.00, is designed to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. The scholarship helps cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, ambassadorial scholars share with Rotarians and others their experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country. Almost 37000 men and women from 110 nations have studied as ambassadorial scholars in another country in any field of their choosing.

Why don’t you nominate a college age student for this scholarship?
