Fundraising Opportuntity: Harlem Ambassadors Show Basketball Team

Dear Rotary Club of Southwest Pacific County:

The Harlem Ambassadors Show Basketball Team has performed special community events throughout the United States and 19 foreign countries.  We have worked extensively with Rotary Clubs and would be happy to provide references. You can learn more about us on our website at www.harlemambassadors.com

The Harlem Ambassadors feature a “Harlem-style” Basketball Show, including ball handling tricks, slam dunks and hilarious comedy routines. The Harlem Ambassadors are the largest provider of entertainment services to the military having performed at over 100 bases worldwide. Our team consists of men professionals with major college and pro experience.  All of our players are college educated, drug-free, and positive in appearance. In addition to their basketball skills, they bring a message to the youth of the importance of staying in school and staying off drugs.

We will be touring through Washington and wanted to see if your Rotary Club might be interested in a special fundraising event with the Harlem Ambassadors in November 2007.

Unique is that our featured comic performer is a woman player. She is a world class basketball player and a world class comedienne. She plays and competes against the men and represents a great role model for young girls.

Our fundraising package is complete for you and your organization to present a successful community event. I would be happy to also forward to you a package of references and our Promotional video.  Please let me know if you are interested in learning more about our great fundraising plan.

Thank You,

THIS IS ROTARY FAMILY MONTH. Please celebrate by focusing on Family of Rotary projects …

Bill Boyd writes in the December issue of Rotarian Magazine: “Being part of Rotary means being part of the

largest extended family in the world. Rotary is an organization of people who care – about their homes,

their communities, and each other. And caring is what family is all about.” PLEASE SHARE SOME OF

YOUR DISTRICT’S SPECIAL FAMILY OF ROTARY MOMENTS THAT MODEL CARING AMONG MEMBERS

OF OUR EXTENDED ROTARY FAMILY. I WILL SHARE THESE WITH THE LARGER ROTARY WORLD

COMMUNITY ON YOUR BEHALF.

Much gratitude for all you are doing on behalf of our wonderous Family of Rotary.

Have a happy and safe holiday season. Many blessings and much gratitude.

Yours in Rotary friendship, passion, and service,

John

WCS project partnerships among N Coast Clubs

Fellow Rotarians,

Please see the information below on two World Community Service projects championed by the Seaside club.  Stewart has met with the recipient Rotarians and club members plan to go to the projects also.  If you are inspired to participate, please let me know and we’ll put our club’s potential participation on the agenda for our next Board meeting.

I’ve got the attachment information noted below; simply indicate your interest and I’ll forward it along:  keleigh at beachrotary dot org or call Stewart (his contact info is below).

Bali school project - attached is a PDF document put together by Charles, working with his contact in RC Ubud, Bali.  It includes a map (Ubud is in central Bali) – and attached is the draft MG form – it is presently being revised to include signatures, slightly more info.  All we need to finish the club funding for this project is $1000.  Also attached is a sample list of supplies/furniture for a single school.  Our committee member Charles Dice is moving this one forward, on a fast track.  We hope the D5100 Grants subcommittee will consider it in the next week or two.
Note – there are 44 village schools identified … if your club (or 2 clubs) wants to contribute more than $1000, we can increase the number of schools that would be helped!  A $2500 contribution (matching ours) might put us on the way to fitting out 5 village schools (about 900-1000 children), assuming DDF can be had to match.
[On this project, a Bali Rotarian (VP of the Club) is contributing $1000 of her personal funds to our effort, which helps multiply the total available for this project, and make her a multiple-PHF donor.]

Clean Water project in Gadung, Indonesia – attached is the writeup by the RC Denpasar Kota describing this project, which bring clean water to a community of 1600 people whose nearest clean source now is 3 miles away.  Committee member Denise Lyon is working on this one, and has a number of questions “vetting” the club and project to be they are both “solid”.  We are looking for about $2000 in club contributions to go with our $2500; total project is about $15,000.

Jim’s Best Joke This Year

The Americans and the Japanese decided to engage in a competitive boat race. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance.

On the big day they felt ready. The Japanese won by a mile. Afterward, the American team was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recmmended corrective action.

The consultant’s finding: The Japanese team had eight people rowing and one person steering; the American team had one person rowing and eight people steering.

After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the consultant firm concluded that too many people werre steering and not enough were rowing on the American team.

So as race day neared again the following year, the American team’s management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive.

The next year, the Japanese won by two miles. Humiliated, the American corporation laid off the rower for poor performance and gave the managers a bonus for discovering the problem.

$10 Ski Lift Tickets & $49 Room Rates!

Rotary Ski Fest is just around the corner! The Hood River Rotary would like to invite you and your friends to an affordable evening of skiing and fellowship, with other Rotarians and businesspeople from throughout our District. You are encouraged to participate, as this does count as an approved makeup.

Rotary Ski Fest is Monday, January 22, 2007. In addition to skiing from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm, we will have evening entertainment in the lounge from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. To keep the event affordable, Mt. Hood Meadows has agreed to sell lift tickets in advance for $10. All advance sales tickets will allow skiers to start skiing at 1:00 pm and ski until 9:00 pm.

For the racer types, Rotarians and ringers, we include a friendly race competition. We have a beautiful permanent trophy that rotates to the winning club each year. So far, it has only left Hood River a couple of times. We’d love to see another club take it away again!

These tickets make great stocking stuffers for the upcoming holiday season!

For the first 10 tickets sold, the proceeds go to the Rotary Club of Hood River. For any number of tickets sold over 10, the proceeds will be split 50/50. Some clubs haave increased their participation by chartering buses! (Contact Evergreen Stage at 503.285.9845 or RAZ at 503.246.3301 for bus info).

For those interested in accommodations, we’ve sweetened the deal. Stay overnight Sunday at the Best Western Hood River Inn at a special $49 rate! 800.828.7873
