Words from a group study exchange team member

“In Warsaw, Woijeich Sierpinski, a Rotary club president, took me on a tour that I will never forget. We visited his parent’s house – where they lived during World War II. There in the kitchen, under a dusty stack of crates was a secret wood panel in the floor. Woijeich removed the panel to reveal a tiny room underneath the kitchen floor where his parents hid their neighbors – a Jewish family – during the war. As I stood speechless, listening to Woijeich describe how they evaded the Nazis, I realized the full value of the group study exchange program.”

Ian Oxman, group study exchange member from California

What is a Rotary Foundation group study exchange?

Established in 1965-66 the group study exchange program is an educational program that promotes international understanding through organized travel and personal contact. The program provides travel grants for teams of young professional men and women to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members study the host country’s institutions and ways of life, observe their own professions as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. A group study exchange team is headed by a Rotarian who is joined by 4-5 non-Rotarians.

You can volunteer to be a group study exchange team leader or nominate a non-Rotarian group study exchange team member – which will it be?

It’s RYLA Candidate Time!

I hope that SW Pacific County Peninsula Rotary will be sending a RYLA participant this year. Attached are application forms as well as a brochure on RYLA. Please note that the date on the brochure should read 7/7 – 7/13.

Please let me know if you need anything to get applicants, including a presentation on RYLA. Thanks!

What is a Rotary Foundation grant for university teachers?

Established in 1985-86 the Rotary Foundation grant for university teachers provides funds to higher education faculty to travel abroad and teach at colleges/universities in developing countries. This program is intended to build international understanding and foster development while strengthening higher education in low-income countries. The programs also aims to establish ties between higher education institutions, leading to the exchange of ideas and information across the globe. Subjects taught must be relevant to local population needs and add to the local area’s socio-economic development.

Why don’t you nominate a college teacher for this grant?

Weekly Club Bulletin

Fellow Rotarians,

I sure enjoyed handing out checks in excess of $10,000 at Tuesday’s meeting.  I am in awe of the power of people with vision and commitment.  I applaud you!

Thanks to Nancey (for providing) and Lynn (for winning) a wonderfully themed  birthday auction!

Please do make a few minutes to stop in to see Sam:  Long Beach Retirement Center, North 8th & Washington in Long Beach.

We voted at the Board Meeting to support (drum roll, please!) the newest Rotary Club on the coast!  The North Tillamook Club will meet at noon at the Sea Shack in Wheeler.  We’re waiting to hear what the club needs, but would like to purchase and engrave their club bell and have set aside up to $300 for that purpose.

The Board also voted to sponsor a Loyalty Days Princess.  The financial commitment is $200; $100 toward a formal gown and $100 for 100 buttons we can distribute and optionally re-sell at $1 each.  The Loyalty Days Committee is accepting applications now and will narrow the field to 8 candidates soon.  We look forward to meeting ‘our ‘ princess and hope this association will serve as a nice bridge toward Interact.  If anyone is interested in hosting a table at the Dignitaries Banquet, contact Bob or Judi Andrew <bjandrew@centurytel.net>.

Emily reported that our Fundraising Committee will once again be hosting a silent auction at our installation dinner in June.  Start thinking now about what you will offer to auction.  Remember, your offering should tell the club a little bit about you.   The committee is looking for club members interested in working with River City School of Dance on a cooperative scholarship project and, of course, Oysters & Art preparations have begun.  Do we want to fundraise to support the Potato project?

What is a Rotary Foundation World Peace Scholarship?

Established in 2002 the Rotary Foundation has partnered with eight
leading universities in seven centers around the world to establish
the Rotary centers for international studies in peace and conflict
resolution. The eight universities are (1) duke university, (2)
university of north carolina at chapel hill, (3) sciences po in
paris, france, (4) university of bradford in west yorkshire, england,
(5) university of queensland in brisbane, queensland, australia, (6)
international christian university in tokyo, Japan, (7) universidad
del salvador in buenos aires, argentina, and (8) university of
california at berkley. Each year, Rotary selects up to 70 scholars
(10 per center) to study at one of the seven Rotary centers in a two-
year master's level degree program in conflict resolution, peace
studies, and international relations. Each Rotary district may
nominate one candidate for this $50,000.00 scholarship.

Announcements From DG Tom

Membership: Our [District 5100] membership numbers are up nicely. Through December, our total membership gain is 68… Remember, positive membership growth is the only mandatory to achieve a Presidential Citation.

Foundation Giving & Red Wing Society: [District 5100] giving to the RI Foundation is up 48% over last year. I ask that each of you continue to ask your Rotarians to make your club a 100% giving club. The Red Wing Society is focused more on having everyone participate with a $100.00 contribution than to seek one or two members who can contribute substantial funds. We love our big donors but my thrust is to have everyone on board. Mary and I will make our contribution this month in anticipation of the overall success of the program in the District.

New address for all contributions to the RI Foundation. The address is: The Rotary Foundation, 14280 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, Illinois, 60693. The new donation form is 123 EN. This form has the new address and also the new telephone number, 1-866 976 8279. Donations done on line will reflect in your record immediately.

Available District Funds:  …We have only spent about half of our available District Designated Funds and less than 25% of our District Simplified Grants Funds. Each club has until March 31st, to submit a matching grant project, get it approved by the District Grants Committee and into the RI Foundation for approval. The deadline for the submission of District Simplified Grants is also March 31st

District Web Site. …Please … go to the web site and forward suggestions for making the site better. One click on the events link at the top of the page will give you what District Events are scheduled.  Right below the District Events, individual clubs can list their events. Work with webmaster Ray and together we will have an excellent information tool.

District Golf Tournament (during District Conference in Salem, May 3): For the last several years the tournament has been cancelled for lack of sign up. This year, we hope to have 36 four person teams sign up. The event will be at Oak Knoll, 10 minutes west of Salem on Thursday May 3rd. The registration form is on the web. I can’t think of a better way to practice Rotary Fellowship, than an afternoon of golf. The winning club team will receive huge recognition at the conference. Sandbaggers must have been initiated into your club prior to teeing off.

The Rotary International Convention, Salt Lake City, June 17-20: Everyone should experience at least one Rotary International Convention. This coming year, the convention is nearby. Make plans now…
