Recycle Your Used Medical Textbooks Through the Minds of Others!

DONATE THEM FOR SHIPMENT TO THE  GULU MEDICAL SCHOOL IN NORTHERN UGANDA

The library of Gulu Medical School needs basic medical books. Shortage of funds precludes ordering of the books that are needed. Please consider donating any used textbooks that you no longer need to Beaverton Rotary Club’s “Books For The World Project”, which has shipped more than 400 tons of still-useful used textbooks from the Portland area to Uganda, Thailand and Cambodia since 2000. Your books can be included in the next shipment to Gulu University, which will be sent about the end of the summer.

You can deliver your books to the Blue Bird Transfer Inc. warehouse at 7555 SW Tech Center Drive, off SW 72nd Ave. in Tigard between 7:30 am and 4 pm M-F or you can call 503-533-4190 or e-mail rj.lockard@verizon.net for pick-up.  Locally, contact Shirley Pryor-Pyne at 360-642-2789.

“Books for the World” is a World Community Service Project of Beaverton Rotary Club and many partners, including our own Rotary Club of SW Pacific County Peninsula.

Books For Uganda Project

Hello to all;

I am happy to send you a progress report on the MG for which you club/district generously approved donor funds. A total of $13,850 was donated by eleven Rotary Clubs and $15,000 by districts 5100 and 5970.

On Feb 23 TRF sent a letter of approval of the MG application. The grant will provide $50,975 for the Books For Uganda project. It will pay shipping costs for multiple 40 ft containers of used textbooks from Oregon to Gulu in Uganda and will help our partner, Gulu Rotary Club, with the costs of distribution of hundreds of thousands of used textbooks from OR and WA schools. Those books will help restart schools in the war-ravaged northern region of Uganda where an entire generation of children grew up in refugee camps without schooling during the 20 year war waged by the Lord’s Resistance Army.

All club donor funds and documents needed from the international and host clubs have been sent to TRF.  We are now hoping for transfer of funds from TRF within four to six weeks.

We have enough used textbooks to fill three 40 ft containers ready to be loaded. They are two containers of K-12 textbooks from a new partner, a used book dealer in Harrisburg, PA, and one container of higher ed books from Bookbyte, our partner in Salem. I am attaching photos that show the high quality of books that we will be shipping from Harrisburg and a photo of some big bins of some very good used higher ed books that we shipped in December from Bookbyte.

Thank you again for your support of this project. It is helping to educate many poor children who dream of a better life through education.
